Purpose

  • Evaluate the Ulnar Nerve as a cause of the patients symptoms
  • First described by Pitres and Testut in 1925[2]
  • However, it's named after Dr Masao Egawa, a Japanese physician who described the test in 1969 (need citation)

Description

  • Stabilize the dorsal hand against a wall
  • Examiner then asks the patient to flex the middle finger metacarpal phalangeal joint and then to abduct it to both sides.
  • This can be difficult
  • Compare to the unaffected side
  • Positive test
    • Inability to perform this action as compared with uninvolved side

Pathology

  • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
  • Ulnar Nerve Injury
